The Pitta Dosha

Pitta is made up of two elements: fire and water. Pitta contains fire, yet also contains water. It is the source of the flame, but not the flame itself. People with dominant Pitta in their constitutions tend to be of medium build with warm skin that is very fair or ruddy and fine hair that tends to towards premature graying or thinning. They may be sensitive and are sharp and determined in thought, speech and action. A Pitta individual has an element of purpose in their manner and intensity to their voice. They are moderate sleepers and gravitate towards cooler environments. Ambition is of great importance to them. Pittas tend to be self-confidence and possess an entrepreneurial spirit.

When any of these qualities become too extreme, or more pronounced than usual, the Pitta in you has become aggravated and needs to be brought back to balance. In turn, if Kapha or Vata person starts exhibiting many Pitta qualities, it indicates a Pitta imbalance. In either scenario, a Pitta balancing diet and lifestyle would be suggested to help restore the level of Pitta in the physiology of the individual’s prakruti percentage.

Factors which can elevate the Pitta dosha can include: a diet that contains too many spicy or sour foods, fasting or skipping meals, over-exposure to the sun or too hot of temperatures and emotional trauma.
